Flood evidence

Genesis Chapter 7 says: ”The sources of the watery depths burst open, the floodgates of the sky were opened, and the rain fell on the earth 40 days and 40 nights. The waters surged and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. Then the waters surged even higher on the earth, and all the high mountains under the whole sky were covered. The mountains were covered as the waters surged above them more than 20 feet.” Genesis than tells us that waters receding steadily until dry land appeared again. ”The sources of the watery depths and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky stopped. The water steadily receded from the earth”.

If the worldwide flood of Genesis really took place as described above, what evidence would we expect to find today?

​

- First of all, we should obviously find a vast amount of water on the Earth’s surface.

​

- If water rose above the tallest mountains, we should find marine fossils on top of the tallest mountains, like the 

  Himalayas for example.

​

- Like a tsunami, all this water would have stirred up everything that lies on the Earth’s surface and rapidly 

  buried animals to form fossils. Rapid burial is required for fossils to be preserved.

​

- If vast amounts of water burst from watery depths, we should expect the continents that existed  before the 

  flood to have been broken up in many pieces and propelled across the globe by the upwelling molten rock from 

  the underlying mantle. These continent pieces should fit together like a puzzle.

​

- As the flood receded, water should have been trapped in depressions found on land. We should find large 

  inland seas and lakes all over the Earth, including at high altitudes.

​

- The water run-off should have left traces on the land’s surface. We should find large ravines (e.g. canyons) and 

  rock formations (e.g. hoodoos) left behind when less resistant deposits were washed away.

​

- A cataclysm of such epic proportion should have been told from generations to generations.  We should find 

  traditions of a great flood among peoples and tribes in all parts of the world.

​

Amazingly, we do find all of the above evidence in abundance on Earth today. A single global flood event provides a very reasonable and plausible explanation for so many of our planet’s features.

​

On a more colorful note, Genesis tells us that the rainbow is a sign of God’s covenant with Noah that a global flood will never again destroy all flesh on Earth. One has to admit that it is rather amazing how such a colorful and perfect arch appears high up in the sky when rain is taken over by the sun’s rays. If God wanted to give us a sign of his promise, it would be hard to imagine something more fitting.
